The much maligned semi-colon

To whoever is editing my piece 'The Magic of Madrid' and has so far rejected it three times on 'improper use of the semi-colon'.
I am just about to upload the article again having removed all but two of the semi-colons so if you still have reservations, please could I ask that we agree to differ? After all, not all punctuation has hard and fast rules and there surely ought to be some room for interpretation. Thank you for your time and my sincere apologies for what must be a very frustrating experience on your part!

Semicolons may be used to separate parts of sentences that contain internal commas (in a series) or they may separate two independent clauses. They do not separate a dependent clause from an independent one, as the link you were sent as a reference indicates.

I'm holding my breath in the hopes that I've finally taken the hint on which sentance in my article you're referring to!If I'm still wrong, there may be no hope for me
