Is this correct?

Post by vjlenin »

Hi Friends, I got a rejection for my article about Microsoft Office today. Here's the rejection note I got:

We do not accept content with grammar errors.

Be consistent with verb tense and avoid awkward/ungrammatical tense shift.
Ex: Fewer books, not less books http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/601/08

We do not accept articles that contain the first-person POV for for various reasons. Please avoid use of the first-person POV and do not submit personal narratives/accounts. You can read more about why we do not accept these here: http://www.constant-content.com/blog/?p=90

Please note that we do not accept content that uses the first-person plural when it refers to the author.
***

I have this sentence "Exploring all these features can take up a lot of space, so we will check out the most important features in this section." Do you think this is what first person pov in plural in rejection note refers to? If so, I believe many authors here, and even myself previously, have used such sentneces in articles before, right? I think only the use of 'I' is prevented?

Second: "Technical Publication, Ars Technica noted that Office 2010 supports 64 bit editions of all Windows operating systems, but that of Windows XP. " Friends, is this sentence wrong according to the first link at OWL above? I belive it's not. What you think?

Third: "PowerPoint 2010 comes with video triggers and controls, which were not available in its previous versions." Is this sentence really wrong since it has 'were'? I had a doubt on this, but kept it thinking it's really not wrong.

"PowerPoint 2010 comes with video triggers and controls, which were not available in its previous versions."

My suggestion: PowerPoint 2010 comes with video triggers and controls, helpful new features not included in earlier PowerPoint versions.

" so we will check out " is first person narrative. Instead say "this article explores" or "here are the most important changes" or cut this filler language completely.

In some cases "we" is acceptable when referring to the entire human race or maybe all women but in this case "we" refers to the author and the reader taking a stroll through some features together.

The problem here seems to be with comma placement and/or clarity. First, are you saying that Ars Technica is a technical publication? If so, better to say "Ars Technica, a technical publication, noted that . . ." Or, if you really want to maintain the word order, it should read "Technical publication Ars Technica noted . . ." (lowercase "p", no comma) Second, are you saying "Office 2010 supports 64 bit editions of all Windows operating systems except Windows XP"? There shouldn't be any comma, and I think you can take out "that of" in this case. You're just referring to the specific Windows OS, so it's correct. Also, "64-bit" should be hyphenated.

I don't see any verb problem.

Hope that helps!
