Romanticism

Post by audrabianca »

Ed,

A quick question. If the references to Romanticism (from literature and art) are removed, the article would be fine...?????

Thanks,

The idea needs to be defined for the context of the article. "Romanticism" means many different things. Without a definition for the context of the article, it the use of the word becomes meaningless because readers will interpret it in whatever way they choose, and their interpretation may or may not suit the context of the article. To illustrate, M-W.com includes 6 definitions for "romantic."

1 : consisting of or resembling a romance
2 : having no basis in fact : imaginary
3 : impractical in conception or plan : visionary
4 a : marked by the imaginative or emotional appeal of what is heroic, adventurous, remote, mysterious, or idealized b often capitalized : of, relating to, or having the characteristics of romanticism c : of or relating to music of the 19th century characterized by an emphasis on subjective emotional qualities and freedom of form; also : of or relating to a composer of this music
5 a : having an inclination for romance : responsive to the appeal of what is idealized, heroic, or adventurous b : marked by expressions of love or affection c : conducive to or suitable for lovemaking
6 : of, relating to, or constituting the part of the hero especially in a light comedy

It will also have to be made clear how the tips in the article help to counter a romantic attitude, as defined by the author, about life.

Thanks,
Ed

Thanks. I will try to find a new angle to the intro that includes a definition of the word that I want people to think about when they read the tips.

I looked at your MW post. The definition I was going for was idealized, but not in relation to romance. Maybe I need a different word??

Might seem like a stupid suggestion, but what about "idealized" itself? "Idealistic", "Utopian", "fanciful" or "idyllic" all have different shades of meaning that might work, depending on your article topic. :)

I used idealized and idealistic, we will see if it works. In the process of editing, I also changed the title and added another tip. That is what happens when I look at an article again.
