This is the best site I've found for submitting articles for sale for decent pay.
I am experimenting with blogging and affiliate marketing, too, but I have made more from this site on a per-hour basis than any other site.

There is one called whiffyskunk.com - it calls itself a gallery and has the same opinion as your friend. It is free and new just goto the download gallery and join. It does articles and short stories as digital downloads. It doesn't supervise content and takes no money.
