Submitting photos with an article

I know the photo area of cc isn't very active, but as a writer and photographer I'd love to provide an image to go with the article. I've read that you can mention a photo for your article in its summary. Has anyone tried this and had any success? My hunch is I'm better off submitting photos to sites dedicated to stock photography.
