HTML Markup: Mother May I?

I'm getting ready to upload my first articles today... What is the general consensus on putting HTML in our articles? I'm not talking about links. Just formatting markup: bold, italics, bulletted lists, ordered lists. What do y'all think?

I have no problems with this as long as you don't get carried away

Links are not allowed thought and are discouraged.

Yes, that was why I specified that I wasn't talking about links.
