Usage Rights or Full Rights? Which sell easier?

Post by Dr. Kristie »

Hi! I'm relatively new to C.C. I've mostly listed articles that have been published in the past for usage rights. I'm wondering whether articles where full rights are offered sell better than those with where only usage rights are offered. Thanks for your opinion. :-)

Hi Dr. Kristie,

I have always submitted new content here, and have found that there is a good market for articles with full rights, so maybe you could try a few with fullrights options.

(I have been on a long break from here, but am now planning to put up some of my articles published elsewhere for usage as well. )

When you respond to requests, most articles need to have full rights options anyway.....hope this helps.

For me, usage has been a bust. Full rights is where I've had my most success. Sure, if you have previously published stuff, put it up for usage and see what happens. But from my experience, the best way to make money here is with full rights.

At first, I had visions of articles selling over and over again for usage but in reality only a few (out of hundreds) have ended up doing that. Even so, those few have just barely earned out past the full rights price. When they do, granted, it is awesome! And I see the ultimate potential there.... but my successes have come by full rights purchases.

The best way to get full rights is to price usage and unique higher than you might normally consider. I shudder when I see articles going for $5 for usage. My head spins and all that good stuff.

Anyhow, that's my 2 pennies . . .

I'm a newbie, haven't yet written anything here as I'm still trying to learn all I can before I dive in. How much of a difference is there typically between the selling price of unique and full rights? Does it seem to make a big difference in the price and how easy it is to sell the article? The idea of full rights just doesn't make me that comfortable, but if it's a huge difference I may have to suck it up.

The writers will certainly chime in here, but full rights sell easily because, under this license, website owners can customize articles to suit their website SEO needs. Although we've seen a surge in usage rights sales, offering full rights is still a good idea if you want to make the most from your submissions.

Yes, Ed is right. Most of the time the articles go to websites and in many cases the webmasters want to tweak the article or be able to update them down the road.

Many buy full rights and still keep your byline. I've never had a problem writing something, selling it for full rights and letting the customer do with it as they please.
