Use something you've sold full rights to as a sample?

Post by Julie »

Hi,

What are the rules about using something you've sold the full rights to as a writing sample when bidding/applying for a gig? I have a sample that I've sold, no idea where it went, where it is being used, but it would be perfect as a sample for what I'm applying for. Not sure if it is okay to use the sold sample. I would of course make it clear that I no longer own the rights, but i still feel nervous about it.

I guess if no one is around here today and I don't get any of your good advice soon, I'll just opt not to use it. Still wouldn't mind knowing the rules about this though.

Thanks, and happy weekend, even of you are working . . .

Julie,

You could do a search for your sold article and point the customer to the url. Or you could describe the article you wrote, explain that it sold to someone else and that you would be able to write an original article, and then provide one or two paragraphs from that article if the customer asks for it.

Does this help?

Hi Ed,

Yes it does help, because you sound as though you are advising not to attach my MS Works copy of the article to which I am referring. Thus far I have not been able to find it any where by doing a search online, so giving the link is not an option. I'd rather give an actual sample than just describe one, so I will just use something else I still own.

As always, sincere thanks for the help and the quick response. A bit eerie how you always seem to be out there somewhere, always working . . . should we be concerned??

I always thought Ed was a bit eerie. And it isn't even October yet. I wonder what he (I think he is a he) will be like when Halloween gets closer.

I will only edit by moonlight and make corrections in beet juice. My army of ghost writers (har har) will haunt the site. Expect lots of howling.
