Opinion-based articles?

Post by MHill »

Hi, I'm completely new to CC. I'm thinking about writing an article in favour of wikileaks. There are already several similar articles already available by other authors.

My main concern is the nature of the article. There's a rule in the Extended Writer Guidelines that specifies that opinion-based articles or editorial style pieces will not be accepted. However, I had a look at the list of articles for sale and there are several articles that, to me, appear to be opinion-based, especially in the Politics and Current Events categories. I'm a little hesitant at linking to the articles I'm thinking about though, so I won't be able to provide any examples.

When I write, I write with the idea that all articles should be argumentative in some way or another, even if it's just a simple list. This is so I can inject passion and interest into the article. This would, of course, imply that the article is somewhat opinion-based, because I am arguing one way or another based on my opinion. (for example: In my opinion, the "Five Best Colours for the Spring Fashion Season" are teal, fuschia, peach etc etc)

My question is, what guidelines do the editors follow when determining if something is opinion based? Do they just reject the article if it starts with "I believe", or is there a certain threshold from where an informative article crosses into opinionative? If the article relies upon a large amount of evidence, does it stop being opinion based?

Since CC doesn't accept first person articles except when it's specifically requested by a buyer, I think the same would hold true for op-ed, and is probably the reason you've found some in the general catalog. If buyers have requested a topic, but did not complete the purchase, it would likely have been moved.
