don't know how to retrieve "new messages"

I must be doing something wrong because I just get taken to the public requests page. No topic is marked in any way. Help! I want to be able to respond to any messages.

There should be a nice big exclamation mark (in a red triangle, I think), indicating where your message is (you may need to scroll right down the page). Click on the 'questions' link (I think), and you should see the message. You can respond in the same way you send links to a customer.

If it no longer shows the exclamation mark, try clicking each request's Q&A just to be on the safe side.
