messaging system - customer's end

I'm wondering how the messaging system works on the customer's side. When an author posts a question in a customer's Q and A - does the customer have to go to Q and A to read the question? Or does the customer get an email, or notice of a message? Thanks.

I think it works the same as on our side, and they just get an email notification that they have received #new messages, which they can view within the email notice, or log on to CC to view it and then be able to respond from the site.

NOW, I just wish they'd make it so we could reply to the message from our email servers!!! That would just be Kick-A##!!
