Punctuating "eg."

I'm having trouble with an "Eg.", as in, "for example". I can't recall how the punctuation goes. I've looked it up online and sources say it properly looks like this: E.g., the seventh century. That doesn't look right and I'd hate to have my article refused. Could someone help me out? Thank you kindly.
