Hi all,
I'm new here and trying to get a feel for CC. Is it appropriate to use a story or scenario written in third person to convey a message in an article?

Yes, as long as it does not encompass the entire article.
Thanks,
Ed

What I have done is to use, "For Example:" Without the quotations of course. This way I can show what I'm talking about in a story-form to get the point across.
For example: When you remove the flash drive from your USB port, be sure to click the "Safely Remove Device" icon on the bottom right of toolbar before pulling it out.
The example saves me a couple of paragraphs, and is easier to understand. There are other ways to do this, but I hope this helps a little.
