Seasonal pieces

What's a good rule of thumb for a seasonal piece as far as when to submit it? Would 3 months before it should be published be about right? Or longer in case it doesn't sell immediately?
3-6 months. That's when webmasters want to have that content posted by so that it will be indexed by search engines and integrated into their site (with links and related content) by the time the holiday rolls around.
