I uploaded an article yesterday for a public request, and then decided to edit the short summary. I didn't notice before I pressed submit that there's no "This is not for a request / this is for a public request / this is for a private request" box on the editing screen.

Now I'm thinking that perhaps I shouldn't have edited it, because maybe it cleared my selection of public request? Reassure me?

I think it's probably fine. If you look under my content you should see its status in review. Your original selection of For A Request will still hold.

Result: It was fine.
