How are articles arranged when you click on articles?

What determines how new articles are arranged when you just click on "articles". I assumed the most recently submitted (and approved) articles would show up first but have noticed that sometimes an article will stay on the first page and other newer articles will move down. How is the system arranging them? Just wondering.
