You have been invited to a project

I got an email this morning saying that a customer has invited me to take part in a project. When I click the link, I can see an empty calendar and a project description but there's nothing that I'm obviously being asked to do. Can someone explain how the project feature of CC works? What is it for? How is it different to usual relationships with clients via pool/private requests?
