Semicolons

Hi everyone,
I'm new so I didn't think this belonged in the authors section. I'm looking for confirmation that my semi-colon use is not completely hopeless. If you wouldn't mind taking a look and letting me know what you think, I'd appreciate it.
Here's a section of article I'm currently working on:
Upon admittance, the hospital inserts an IV; this restricts your movement and can prolong your labor. The doctor suggests that you are failing to progress and recommends pitocin to speed things along; as a result, your contractions are now coming fast and are unbearably painful. You ask for an epidural and get relief; however, the epidural slows down your contractions.
And any other constructive criticisms are welcome, as well!
