Special Characters?

I'm wondering if we are allowed to use special characters with diacritical marks in our submissions?
For example, I've just submitted an article on Sanskrit and I used words such as Ṛgveda and Upaniṣads.
I figure that I don't absolutely HAVE to use these characters, but it IS more correct that way, and whoever would be interested in an article like this would probably already know a thing or two (as I can't see someone buying this on a sheer whim or something), and would appreciate correct Sanskrit transliteration.
I noticed that special characters show up as question marks in the CC preview, so I have replaced them with regular letters there, but would the editors reject my article for having them in the submitted file?
Thanks!

EDIT
My article has been accepted so in case anyone else was wondering, looks like such characters are okay
