Calling all comma experts!

Post by Julie »

Hi,

Shaking in my boots to resubmit an article rejected for a silly mistake. (And dancing in them too after having my first two accepted and one sold!!) I would like to avoid a second rejection so I thought I'd pick your wise brains! Thanks for your help.

If the following statement was in one of your articles, how would you punctuate it?

Perhaps a simple stamp of the family name such as "The Smith Family" would be appropriate.

My impulse is not to include any commas and leave it as is. My overthinking teacher brain is telling me you always offset quotation marks with commas. What do the experts say?

Perhaps a simple stamp of the family name, (comma) such as "The Smith Family,(comma)" would be appropriate.

Set off the clause rather than the name.

Thanks,
Ed
