Questions about submission text

I'm wondering if anyone can set me straight on the difference between .txt and .rtf.
I am submitting TextEdit: .txt (I think that is plain text). I prefer to use .rtf (rich text format). They both look the same but the .rtf has some nice features that .txt doesn't have - such as the ability to make one word italics, rather than the entire article.
I understand that search engines like plain text but I think rich text may be as "likable." I'll appreciate any info or opinions on this and also if there is a preference for Admin.
Oh, I have a Mac. Don't know if that makes any difference.
Thanks, Aariana
