Advertising Oneself

Hi, does anyone have advice for marketing oneself as an author? Do people set up websites or advertise their url on other sites? I'd like to find a low cost way of advertising to promote that I'm a freelance writer. Thanks.

I market my writing business by:

-- running a blog and working to keep visitors coming back for new news

-- having a static website (which always seems to need improvement!)

-- doing some article marketing, mentioning in my signature that I'm a writer, and

-- I also have a Squidoo lens related to my writing services

Well...not much yet. Although I do see that when you sell an article, it's listed, so that's an opportunity for people to see things that have recently sold.

I'm trying not to bite off more than I can chew in terms of how many websites I have, but I know I have to employ some more self-promotion tools.

What do you think about email marketing?

Direct email marketing has long since reached saturation. If you see websites that you would like to write for, you might try and find out if they make any money. If they do, you might try and contact the owner directly and offer to write for them, but in general, just spamming someone will get you negative results rather than positive.

The only email advertising (spam) that's worth anything is opt-in, and I'm not sure how that would work for a writer doing self-promotion.

Business cards are great for incidental meetings or community bulletin boards, too.
