Thanks for being so generous with your experiences! More than anything, I think I need to work on my speed if choose to spend more time trying to sell here at CC. I'm pretty swift with research (lots of practice there) but not so good with my re-writes. I tend to need 5 or 6 drafts! (okay, actually, 8 or 9 -- but who counts those first really awful drafts?

JA - One of my critique group members just sold a collection of poems that looks like it could lead to a nice sale on a manuscript she had put back in her file cabinet. A good deal for her. So you never know . . .

J. A. -- I totally agree about things going in cycles. Last month, I made more than twice my monthly goal. YAY!! But this month, at least so far, I've made only a littel more than half. Ouch! (Of course, I'm still making more here than I make anywhere else, so it's all good. :-)

I have two goals; one is a weekly goal, and the other is a monthly goal. The monthly goal is a little higher than the total of the weekly goals...essentially, it's 5 weeks worth.

I've never gone by an hourly rate, because...I don't find it to be helpful for me personally. Of course, I tend to avoid anything that even smacks of a 9-to-5 job. I figure up how much money I need to pay bills and buy groceries, add some for saving and myself, and go from there. But that's just me. :-)

Hi Keesa! I know what you mean about the 9-to-5 mentality. I don't much like it either. It goes against my nature to figure an hourly wage, but I've learned I must. I think some folks have an innate sense of good business deals or an effortless mental math ability that I lack.

I'm not a good judge of time so I've been burned on a few projects that I thought were excellent (high dollar) until I did the math afterwards. I had earned less than minimum wage because the job required so many more hours that I had anticipated. (Honestly, on one long-term project I think I made less than a dollar an hour when it was all said and done. Oh that was a sad, sad feeling.) Oh well. Live and learn! Anyway -- I love the perks with writing - setting my own hours and picking and choosing my projects. These things do tend to take the sting away -- after a while!
