How do you price articles to get Unique or Full rights sales

Hi

Celeste, I noticed in one forum that you aim to get more unique or full rights sales rather than usage. I would definitely prefer to do this too, as you can command a higher price for these rights rather than hope you will get a couple of downloads on usage for each article to make it worthwhile. I've had a couple of successes, (see my forum comment on the eureka moment too), but I've had more articles sold for usage than other licence types. I have accepted a few offers at low rates just to get a bit established on CC, but I am now looking for a consistent and better income than just low paying usage rights. How do I get more sales in unique or full rights articles? Any suggestions?

Thanks. By the way, Constant Content is awesome!

Hi Hayley,

I saw your Eureka moment a few days ago and love to see those kinds of moments!

It's pretty easy to discourage usage sales and encourage unique or full rights sales instead but you have to be willing to price accordingly. For example, let's say I have an article about how to tune up a grandfather clock and am not willing to settle for a couple of $10 usage sales. Once sold for usage, the article is destined for that fate. Let's say this article took me two hours to research and write - selling it twice for $10 wouldn't be a wise use of my time and I don't feel there's a large enough demand for articles of this nature. But I'm in control. No one says I have to charge $10 for usage. I can charge whatever I want and the customers can take it or leave it. I might do something like this:

Usage: $60
Unique: $80
Full rights: $100

In this case, could I live with a single $60 usage sale? Probably but it's not likely to sell for that license in this particular market and I am well aware of that. If it doesn, great. If it sells again - better yet. No worries because I don't want it to sell for this license necessarily. I could live with it but that's not what I'm shooting for.

I am also known for pricing like this:
Usage: $100
Unique: $100
Full rights: $100

This effectively takes usage off the table. If the customer wants the article, he needs to pay $100. He's smart to choose full rights. If he chooses usage, well then, I can sell it again! Doesn't matter to me because I got what I wanted (full or unique rights).

So, if you're not interested in usage, don't factor it into the price. Price the licenses for what you could live with if the article sold only once. In addition, usage sales aren't the norm. Most customers prefer unique and full rights.

Thanks Celeste. I'm still new at this game and I appreciate the help! I'll review the pricing structure on my articles!
Kind regards,

Hayley
