Public Requests that go bye-bye

I have a question about public requests. I submitted an article for one, and it was not reviewed yet when the request went away. The requester gave an amount for the article that they were willing to pay. Since it didn't get in on time, I reduced the price of the article (assuming it would just get dropped into the article soup for fair game). Now my approval letter for that article says the requester has three days to pick it up or not. So is it possible I might get short-changed here? If the buyer was willing to pay $XXX.XX and I reduced it to $XX.XX because I thought the request was filled, should I put the price back up where it was for three days? Thanks for your help!
