OK, just wanted to add to this conversation for anyone who's curious about this question. I've been submitting for six months, beginning January, 2010. Here are my stats (please pardon the mild OCD):

Total articles: 85
Articles available in inventory: 57
Full rights licenses available: 25
Use only rights available: 32
Submissions by month (starting January): 27 / 21 / 18 / 10 / 1 / 5
Total sales: 28
Sales by month (starting January): 4 / 3 / 8 / 1 / 2 / 10
Private request sales: 8
Public request sales: 8
Public request articles NOT bought immediately: 15
Not-sold public requests sold later: 1
On spec sales: 12 (see note below)
Full rights sales: 26
Use sales: 2

And yes, total rejections/resubmits: 3

Categories, if you're interested that much:
Gardening/landscaping etc.: 35
Home improvement: 5
Mental health/beauty/health etc.: 10
Real estate/marketing etc.: 18

Notes: My summers are entirely occupied copywriting for another client, so my submissions to C-C will always be down in summer months.

My total on spec sales is 16, but 6 of those sold because of a subsequent private request. The person wanted a series of 10 on that subject.

I've had 3 private requests from 2 different customers.

I also keep track of hits for individual articles to see what's trending there. Nobody is hitting on the spring gardening articles now...but they will next year. However, they are hitting on perrenials and trees, so I should write more of those. My available health/beauty articles have had trending hits each month because they're less dependent on season.

What am I going to do with these numbers? I think I'll change the categories on some of my unsold articles, just to shake things up. I'm going to lower my price on some of the use-only gardening articles and raise them again next February if they don't sell.

Enjoyed reading this, Evelyn! Nice to know how another writer is doing. I've made a similar chart but have not been as successful as you... If I put more time into it, I probably would have a better chance. Hard to balance life, school, and writing.
