Plagiarism Alert: http://everythingn.org - Check Your Work!

Post by ThatWordChick »

Hey ladies and gents -

I make a habit of googling the first line or two of my piece excerpts occasionally to see if anyone's swiping them, and http://everythingn.org showed up today. They swiped my entire excerpt on gold jewelry on the 10th, and it sure looks like everything else on there is CC excerpts as well. I'd google lines from the other stolen content and alert their respective authors, but of course they wouldn't show up in a search because our CC pieces are supposed to be 'virgin', as far as google is concerned.

This is a real issue; we can't even trust image safeguards on our excerpts anymore. What's next, reading aloud? I'd definitely record my excerpts as opposed to displaying them, if given the option.

is "everythingn.org" a typo? I"m seeing a parked domain? Or this was already taken care of. That was quick.

Hey Lysis -

No, it isn't a typo, I imagine they set it up that way on purpose to snag people who actually made typos. I'm not sure if CC was the reason it got pulled - I got a very fast response to my message to them, so that was nice - or the fact that I left a nasty comment that essentially said that I was going to burn their a**es one way or another, but at least it's down.

I'm hoping it won't have lasting repercussions in google, though. I was toying with the idea of springing for Copyscape premium to keep an eye on my stuff, but it ticks me off that I have to pay to find out if my own work is being stolen. Grrrr.

I wish google had something built in where you could enter a block of text and mark it as your own, and get a heads up if someone swipes it. Is there such a thing already?

Yeah, this whole issue really chaps my butt. I hate the content thieves. My BF (a lawyer) and I started a DMCA takedown service. He takes care of the takedown and I do the tech, so he does the nastigrams and I'm the one who gets all worked up over the thieves. lol The service is probably too expensive for a CC writer to just keep track of unsold content, but the blog is free and I started it to help people (mostly writers, because I know they are naive to the whole issue) to understand how duplicate content and Google works. The blog is http://dooplee.com/blog. I really want to help writers understand the technology and how this all works, so they can better fight scrapers. I feel very passionate about this subject, because these people are the scum of the Internet. I just need more time to write blog posts for me and my emotions vs things that will make me money that I need to live. :)

Anywho, glad the content was taken down. Use Google Alerts to keep track of the content thieves. One thing people fail to understand is that although US copyright does not apply in other countries, Google, Yahoo and Bing are US companies, so all three of these will take down stolen content. Yeah, you might not be able to get it taken down from the host server, but you can kill the asshat's Adsense account and remove it from search engines, which means the stolen content is useless and you can ruin their own income by having their adsense account killed. Feels good, man. :) I have no love for these scumbags.

Thanks Celeste. It's fun! One funny thing I found is that I have a harder time writing for myself than here. I have so much I want to say and I have to learn to organize it, because I want it to be an easy read for writers and people who are completely confused by the process. I actually built the site, had it ready and trashed it, because I decided I didn't like it. I am my own worst boss.

Try not to let perfectionism get the best of you. The site content is authorative/informative yet easy to read and understand - and you have compelling calls to action. That's a good recipe! I love that you're putting your passions, talents, and frustrations to work and creating a business that can really help people including your fellow writers and designers -- seriously how cool is that?

That's a great job, Lysis! The Internet is still a place full of mysteries for some of us (including yours truly!) and I didn't even know that there is something you can do about stolen content. In fact, I believe I have been so naive as to not even worry about stolen content because I always thought that there is some built-in way to prove that an article or photo is actually yours. I really feel silly now! :?

I agree with Celeste. Perfectionism can be a serious hindrance. I see that happening with myself every day! I meant to create a website with free english courses, I have the content ready, but keep making changes on visual aspects and I've actually reached the point where I can't even decide on a name for my website  It's really annoying because I'm practically back to point zero. I think this website is never going to go live!

Again, that's great work, Lysis! It was a real eye-opener for me and I believe it's going to help lots of others as well! Keep it up! :)
