Rinding the Waves

I've seen several threads about bouncing from one writing site to another, struggling to get the sales and so forth. I've been writing for nearly 12 years now, and have done everything from articles and stories to full novels and screenplays. It's a tough racket to make a full-time living at. The best thing to do to make a living is find a day job and write on the side for the time being. Writing, like all other forms of entertainment, comes in waves. Fads and fashions come and go quickly, and you've got to be able to adapt and overcome in a hurry. Sure, you can stick to what you like and know, but it'll be a long while before a sale strolls along. Once you generate a reputation within that niche, you could find yourself in over your head in workload. Not a bad thing at all, but you must understand that it will take longer to get there. The best way to get the instant gratification that our modern society holds so dear is to write a lot, write often and over a broad range of popular topics. You can be emtionally invloved in your pieces, but don't get emotionally attached to them. You'll price them too high and work yourself out of a sale.
