I'm often asked to select which industry I work in and, as a freelance writer, I'm never completely sure how to reply so I usually say market research because that's my 'other' job. I'm just wondering how other writers categorize themselves - media & publishing? Entertainment? PR & marketing? Journalism?

I just say doemstic engineering and freelance writing, and laugh at the raised eyebrows I get. But, by identifying myself as a freelance writer, especially to new acquaintances, you wouldn't believe the amount of people who are interested in you writing soemthing for them. Even my gynecologist once asked me to write an article she had outlined, but was having trouble with because English was her third language!
I think next to public speaking, most professionals are very insecure about their writing ability, especially if it will be published.
