Question about how to thank a customer

I have only been here a few weeks and I was curious, if a client purchases several of a writers articles, is it appropriate to send them a note thanking them for their purchase, or not? Is this how authors receive private requests? or do you wait for the client to contact you without personally thanking them for their purchase. Thank you for taking the time to read this and hopefully answer my question.

As long as the request is still open, it's always appropriate to say thanks (You can't find their website and do it outside of CC of course).

I can't imagine anyone getting upset with a few kind words of appreciation.
