Tainted Articles

I sold my first "use" of an article today and while I'm always pleased to make a sale, I now wonder if a usage taints your article from being sold for unique or full rights because subsequent buyers will see that it appears elsewhere. Have other buyers experienced problems with single use rights--has anyone gone on to later sell the article? Any thoughts on the topic? --Jennifer

Hi! It is my understanding that once you sell an article for usage, you can't sell if for unique or full rights. You can, however, continue to sell it for usage rights. Congrats on your sale!

Yes, I understand that now. I guess I still don't know if I like selling the use, but at least it still has money-making potential. Does anyone forego selling usage rights by simply setting the price the same as unique rights? Is this frowned upon or is it a worth-while option?

If you have only sold usage rights on CC, then you may continue to offer the same article for unique and full rights on CC, since the buyer can clearly see that it has been sold as usage before (this does not apply if you have sold rights to the article elsewhere). As for whether this affects future sales of the article, I'm sure that in some cases it does. However, I have some articles that I have sold for usage several times over, which has matched or even surpassed the price I was asking for unique or full rights, so for me that was well worth it.

For some reason I have sold more of Unique and full rights than usage. The few I have sold for usage have never been resold, but that might be a coincidence!

Even when you are selling usage, make sure the price is not too low, and it fully compensates you for the labor you put in it! :D
