Resolutions?

Post by Ed »

I just posted a blog about New Year's resolutions. Anyone making any meaningful ones regarding writing, life, relationships, health, or money that they *really* intend to keep?

What a thought-provoking blog, Ed. I've all ready made my New Year resolutions as far as writing. One I got a head start on and that was to start a blog to help others, especially women who are in "transition." I call transition the time after a life-altering event ocurred, like a divorce, finding a new job after downsizing, losing a partner, etc. In my experience this time in a person's life is confusing, difficult, and downright frightening. It never hurts to get as much help as possible.

My other resolution is self-indulgent. My goal or resolution is to spend at least one hour every day writing fiction, my first love and passion. Unfortunately, fiction has yet to pay a bill so it's pushed aside for another time. Well... no more. I'm going to make time to work on a fiction project that's been running through my head for years.

Happy New Year to All!

These are really inspiring. I admire your time allotment - 1 hour per day is 365 hours in one year. That's a lot of time!

I think that technology has taken some of the community and familial support structures out of society. Good for you for giving of yourself.

My resolutions tend to be on the more personal side because they cause blocks to my writing and ultimately success. This year I'm going to turn that negativity into productivity and personal development. But I am also going to cook more often. ;)

Good for you guys!

I commented already in the blog itself, but will copy it here:

Terrific list, Ed. A few years ago I made a New Year’s Resolution to restart writing fiction after dropping writing altogether since college. I joined a critique group, bought a bunch of books, started banging away on my keyboard and never looked back!

The following New Year, I updated that resolution to include actually making money from writing. I bought Writer’s Market and searched the Internet for freelance writing opportunities. That’s when I found CC in early 2006!

Resolutions are powerful if you’re serious about taking the steps required to reach your goals.

I’m not sure which resolution to pick just yet but your list has me thinking. I like #8 and #10 right off the bat and will probably add “find an agent for my novel” to the list. Yuck, does that mean I have to write and send query letters?

Happy New Year!

That's funny, Celeste - I had you in mind when I wrote #10. That's one that I'm going to try to follow, too. I've been known to play it so "safe" that I paralyze myself. There's something that I've been trying to work on for a couple of years that has been negatively affected by that.

Have a save New Year's, everyone. Tomorrow's a fresh start. Make it a good one.

That's funny that you had me in mind for that. I do need a bit of breathing room to write for myself from time to time. I've learned to take advantage of the slow spells in that regard knowing that another round of busy weeks are sure to follow but I'd love to find the discipline to set aside time for my own projects.

I don't think I can do an hour a day like topdyke but maybe I can shoot for one afternoon a week or something like that. Baby is now a toddler so life doesn't always agree with my plans......
