Quoting Sources

Post by Aariana Adams »

I'm wondering how our authors and Admin feel about quoting sources, such as a columnist (and stating the name of the newspaper) and a particular university study that was reported by the AP, Reuters, etc. (giving proper credit to all sources, of course)?

Is this a problem for Admin? - or for our buyers? Do you stay away from submitting such quotes, or do you think our content buyers shy away from purchasing this material embedded in a pertinent article?

Any opinions will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Aariana

Most of the topics I write about are usually general knowledge type pieces in a specific subject matter that is already something I have a pretty good handle on--so I don't tend to list the various media where I researched about whatever it is--gardening, wine, collecting, etc...However, if I were to write a health-related piece I think revealing a source would serve to give the article credibility--or--could shift the ownership of a controversial opinion back to its orginal source and away from you, the author. However, I, too, wouldn't mind hearing Admin's take on the source question. --J

J - I agree with you and a health related article is what brought this issue to mind.

I also hope Admin has something to say as well as other authors; does anyone feel they have lost a sale for not quoting sources or made a sale because of them? I guess bottom-line, is quoting modern day sources done by anyone here?

Does Admin have a problem for use or non-use of quotes, especially from newspapers?

Thanks for your input.

Health articles are what I write exclusively. My experience is that most clients will just strip the references out so for CC I try to work references directly into the body of the article.

But I definately think references make you look more credible and deliberate.

I typically do the research, then walk away for a bit to let the whole concept sink in which helps me avoid plagiarism (which is always nice  ). Anything that stands out apart from the general knowledge is usually something that needs a reference. If the article is unworkable without this piece of information, then I just quote it or refer the reader to the place where I found it. Probably 9 times out of 10, it's medical. Gosh, with the gambling stuff I just could not make the info my own enough to write those articles. I could not internalize it.

Ok, I'm rambling. Sorry. I think quotes and/or references are helpful to me as a reader so I assume other readers appreciate them as well, if not overdone.

ETA: I once made the mistake of asking a webmaster if I could quote her for an article. She freaked out and wanted all kinds of information about the publication for which I'd be writing it (and I wasn't even sure I'd sell it to the person for whom I wrote it)...so I just took out all the stuff associated with her website and wrote some other stuff. LOL I thanked her for her consideration and told her that I had decided to go in a "different direction." As it turns out, I actually ended up with a better article anyway, so nyah.

Herb Doctor and Lizaj: Thanks to both for your comments. I agree with both of you but it's good to know how things are handled here.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'm off to "submit."
