I've looked at the Premium Articles category and tried to figure out what makes those particluar articles "premium"? I thought perhaps it was higher price, but then saw some for less than $30. So what are the criteria?

They are hand-picked by Ed for standing out - be it a unique angle, in-depth research, or sheer joy to read. These are often longer pieces, potentially better suited for print markets (but not necessarily). It's like an Editor's Choice category.
