How well do video game articles sell?

Post by katamari »

Hello everyone; I'm new here, and thought I'd stop by to introduce myself and ask a question.

I signed up here a few months ago, but never ended up writing anything because at about the same time, I got accepted to Demand Studios. I was happily writing video game titles for them, until just recently. Several days ago, I found out that they were completely getting rid of their Hobbies and Games category. Since 95% of the titles I wrote were about games, I was very upset to learn this.

So, my question is, do video game-related articles sell well, or at all, here? I can certainly write about other things, but I'd like to write about games at least some of the time.

Thanks for any help or answers you can provide!

Welcome!

Sorry to hear that DS is scrapping your favorite category, but it could be a blessing in disguise: articles typically fetch better prices at CC, so if you do find buyers here, you have a good chance of making a bit more money for your time.

Now as to how video game articles sell, I've never written any myself so I can't speak from direct experience there. But it seems that almost anything sells at CC. Most of the customers are webmasters looking for content. There are plenty of video game websites out there, and you'd have to assume at least some of the owners source content rather than writing it themselves.

Since you enjoy writing these articles and I expect you're pretty fast at them by now, why not try posting a few and see how you go? You might also post articles on other topics just to round out your portfolio. Or you could try cross-over articles - ones that might fit into a variety of niches. For example, "Is Your Teen Addicted to Video Games?" (parenting) "How to Find Video Games at Wholesale Prices" (personal finance/frugality) "10 Best Video Game Gifts for the 2010 Holiday Season" (shopping/holidays) I'm sure you can think of better specific ideas though :)

Whatever approach you take, do keep in mind that the right buyer sometimes doesn't come along right away. If you post 5 articles and they don't sell by the end of the week, it's not necessarily an accurate indication of your future success. I remember a few months ago someone came along out of the blue wanting gardening articles, and people who'd been quietly writing away in that niche all of a sudden found dozens of articles getting snapped up.

I have seen several public requests for games in the past year or so - both online and stand alone. The CC motto, at least mine, is write what you know and love. I've even sold a few political articles in the past, although those aren't being accepted much these days. I can't say I've had a buyer for the few online game articles I've done, but mine weren't exactly good reviews (LOTOR Online gets a D- in by book).

Jump on that request, katamari.

If you don't have new request email alerts set up, log on and click Edit My Account. Scroll down a little and make sure the Email Me New Content Requests box is checked. It can take alerts a little time to filter through and be forwarded to your email address, and not all the alerts are sent 100 percent of the time, but if you check your C-C inbox all alerts are there.

Good luck!
