Choosing Usage Vs. Full Rights

Post by jentypist »

When pricing my articles, I'm perplexed as to what to charge for which type of rights. If I write a 1,000 word article, I don't know that I'd want to sell it for full rights, as it is a lot of work and I can't sell it again. But if I price it higher as I would for such a word count as a usage article, won't that discourage buyers? My hope is to charge usage for those articles that have taken me a particularly long time and effort, as they can be sold over and over again. But then my price should come down, correct?

You might try pricing at a rate of 3 to 1. That way, if your article sells three times at usage or one time at full rights it's the same dollar amount. For example:
$30/$60/$90.

$30 usage sales aren't unheard of either. I recently sold a 530-word article for $30 usage.
