Accepted length of Articles

Post by pcreek54 »

I've looked all through the Submission Guidelines, and through the forum, but I can't find anything about the accepted length or word count of articles. I would like to know this because I have a tendency to run on and on thinking I'm not getting my point across. ( I talk that way also. Ha!) Anyway, I have an article written that WAS over 900 words, and someone told me that was too long so I cut it to about 450, but to me, that cut out too much information that I wanted to get across. What would you suggest?

Thanks,
Patti

I don't think article length matters as long as you don't put the editor to sleep. :D

I have a dud of an article that is 1000 words, so I don't think you need to worry other than selling the article.

As far as I know, there is no limit on word count. Most buyers seem to prefer between 400 and 600, but some articles on here (including one of mine) are near 2000. These longer articles will have a tougher time selling but if a buyer is really interested in the topic, he might go for the longer length. If he buys full rights, he can always chop it up to his liking.

Less is more in web content, I'd say. Most online readers want short easily digestible content, so if it is lengthy, you might want to separate it into sub-headings.

If you take a look at the Requested Content, you will see that many buyers specify the lengths they prefer, some as much as 1000 or more (though sometimes they only want to give you $20 for all that work, sheesh!).
