Can anyone tell me how to make certain words in my articles in bold-faced type?

My understanding of the house guidelines is that we are not allowed to use bold type.

I am looking for some input, too. Is this a hard-and-fast rule? I'm preparing a rather long piece and it's instinctual to bold the subheads so the piece reads smoother for the end-user.
